The Englander – San Leandro
April 8, 2013
The meeting was called to order by President Dennis Heffley at 7:30 pm at The Englander in San Leandro CA .
President’s Report: Dennis Heffley – Dennis announced that Singles League won the Far West Racing Championships and Open League came in second. A new category, top points by a family, was won by the Vandermeers from Open League. Conditions on the race course were fairly good, but the slopes were soft so it looks as if the season is just about over. Colorado is getting a lot of late season snow and we can look forward to a report by our travel director, Paula Kinahon, who will be at Snowmass this week for the Mountain Travel Symposium.
Secretary: Cathy Wilson – Karen Davis made a motion to approve the March minutes; Harry Davis seconded the motion and the minutes were unanimously approved.
Nominations Open ~ Offices of the Bay Area Snow Sports Council – Dennis Heffley – For those interested in running for office, Dennis noted that we have two meetings a month for the Board of Directors – the General Meeting on the second Monday of the month and the Board Meeting on the third Monday of the month. Even though we only have two meetings, we manage to get a lot accomplished every month.
Secretary – The secretary takes the minutes at both the General and Board meetings. Sandy Kiyomura nominated Karen Davis, who declined, offering instead to serve as backup. Mary Azevedo was then nominated and she has accepted. Harry Davis moved to close.
Benefits – Benefits manages the discount lift ticket program and the new season pass program. Sandy Kiyomura has been nominated and has accepted. Harry Davis moved to close.
Travel – Travel promotes and manages the BAC participation in FWSA and BAC sponsored trips. The Travel Director also previews the trip locations and participates in the selection of the trips. Paula Kinahon was previously nominated and accepted. As there were no further nominations for this position, Harry Davis moved to close.

The Treasurer also provides monthly financial reports to the Board and files all taxes and tax related documents annually. Paul Vlasveld was previously nominated and accepted. There were no further nominations at this time. Karen Davis moved to close.

Chuck Hennings moved all nominations be closed and Mary Azevedo seconded. Chuck then made a motion to approve the slate of officers by acclamation and the motion carried. Dennis then welcomed the slate of new officers and thanked Linda Indreboe and Ed Pease, outgoing officers, for their service to BAC and its member clubs. Linda, it was noted, has been an officer in BAC for over 11 years! Dennis then invited the new officers to come to any Board meetings before they actually take office in June.
Benefits: Sandy Kiyomura – Resorts are now starting to sell their season passes. There is some discussion now starting up with Squaw and Alpine about a season pass program for BAC. This year’s DSUSA’s ability challenge raised approximately $185,000, about $10,000 more than last year. You can still go out onto the DSUSA web-site and contribute to one of the teams at the event. Sandy noted that there was a recent article in the Chronicle about the event. She described how rewarding it is to meet some of the Wounded Warriors and inspiring to see how they are overcoming their disabilities.
Communities: Harry Davis – Norm Azevedo noted that there is a flyer in the BAC newsletter for the upcoming A’s game on August 2nd. Copies of the flyer will be sent out separately. Norm asked all to make copies of the flyer and give them out at their club meetings. As we did last year, please promote the baseball game as a club event. Make it your TGIF! Last year we had a great turnout. This year we have even better seats, the A’s are already doing well, and we will have another great tailgate party and terrific fireworks. The cutoff date for tickets is July 12th. This is a hard deadline. We will have 150 tickets for sale (last year we sold out, so order your tickets early!) Orders are already being taken and the first to sign up will get the best seats! We will need assistance to help out with the tailgate party. And, don’t forget to bring your chairs. If you need any assistance promoting this event to your clubs, please don’t hesitate to contact Norm or Dennis. All surplus revenue from the event becomes a donation to DSUSA.
Travel: Paula Kinahon (report given by Chuck Hennings) – The 2014 Far West Ski Week will be at Beaver Creek from January 25th to February 1st. BAC is also offering a post trip to Breckenridge for an additional fee. It is important to sign up early for one or both parts of the trip, since lodging will be allocated based on signup order. Information on the trip, including lodging options, has recently been sent out by Paula. The price for the Beaver Creek trip, without air, is $1250-$1350. This trip price includes lodging, 5 days of lift tickets and the Far West amenities package. The trip deposit is $200 and should be sent directly to Paula. If you have an Epic pass you will get a $315 discount on the trip price. In addition, if you have purchased the pass through our travel agent, Sandy Gaudette and skigroup.net you will get a $25 discount on the lodging portion. The deadline for ordering through Sandy is April 13 as the order has to be submitted by April 14 to Vail.
Public Affairs: 2013 FWSA Convention/FWSA Man/Woman of the Year – Linda Indreboe – On Thursday, at 6:30PM at Don Jose’s restaurant in Castro Valley, we will be having a dinner honoring each club’s Man and Woman of the Year. During the event, we will also be selecting the BAC Man and Woman of the Year. In addition, we still have 4 volunteer coordinator positions open for the Convention, plus many volunteers for the days of the event. Barbara Erickson, the convention volunteer coordinator, will be sending out a request for volunteers and has asked all to consider getting at least 4 volunteers from their club.
Treasurer: Paul Vlasveld – our balance sheet is in good order and we will be closing out the year in June. The people who are selected to represent BAC at the convention as Man and Woman of the Year, will get their registration fee and one night’s lodging at the Convention paid for by BAC.
Industry Liaison: Norm Glickman, our Director elect, reported that if you choose to order your season pass directly from Vail, you can do so now with a $49 deposit. Also, Sierra at Tahoe resort is selling their 2013-2014 season pass now and you can use it for the remainder of the season at Sierra and also at Squaw and Alpine. Boreal is also running a special which will allow you access to Mt. Bachelor for the rest of the season. (Ski resort information is subject to change, so please confirm with each area or go to their web-sites for more information.)
Marketing: Theresa Dennes – Please let your clubs know that the FWSA Convention early Bird Dead Line is May 10th for the $149 registration fee. Please note that the deadline for ordering the vest is May 1st. There is a large amount of convention information on the Far West Web Site www.fwsa.org. You can find material to either hand out to your members or use to create your own communication tailored to your members. It is important for all voting delegates to plan to attend the caucuses on Saturday to meet the candidates for Far West offices and hear about their platform and qualifications for office. They should also plan to attend the business meeting on Sunday of the Convention as that is when voting for FWSA officers will take place. There will be a convention orientation on the preceding Friday for those who have never attended a convention before. Please make sure your members know about this. While the deadline for club awards has now passed, it is still possible to enter for the Safety Award, History Award and more. There are great prizes for the winners of these awards and all entry forms are out on the www.fwsa.org.
Communications: Dennie Warren – Dennie was very excited to receive two articles for this month’s newsletter, complete with pictures on the Whitefish Fam trip and the Inskiers cabin event. Please continue to send club news to Dennie for inclusion in the newsletter. Dennis Heffley asked all to make sure their club members receive the information put out by BAC, including the newsletter. Several clubs have mentioned to him that they have not been receiving information and during the next few months, BAC will be working to correct that, but we need the help of the BAC reps. He also asked for suggestions on how to make improvements to our methods of communications if you feel you are not getting the information you need for your club.
